ULTIMATE ROAD TRIP

When Abraham left Ur of the Chaldees to travel to an unknown location, I'm sure that it was rather nerve-racking for him and his family. To leave the comfort of the familiar and the security of those you know and love, all for what you believe to be the instruction of God, is a daunting experience for anyone—even the 'father of the faith.' Throughout his journeys, he made some good choices and some bad choices. There were times when he clearly sensed God's leading and times when he felt as though God was ominously silent. But perhaps what Abraham learned in his lifetime was that it was not as important to always 'get where he was going' as it was to recognize the hand of God that was leading him.

It has often been noted by secular philosophers that success is not the arrival at a destination, but rather the journey itself. Certainly that maxim holds true within Christian circles, as well. It wasn't when Abraham arrived at a given location that the lesson of his life was learned. Perhaps that is why God did not tell him the name of his destination, lest he be tempted to believe that his journey was complete upon arrival. We tend to like to know when we are going to get where we are going. I like that myself. I remember asking my parents that question incessantly as a child traveling to my grandparents, "are we there yet?" But the problem with such perspectives is that it denies us the opportunity to recognize what God is doing in our midst along the way. We can be so desperate to arrive that the thought itself becomes all-consuming. And, in the midst of the anxiety and fretting about the logistics, we can miss some of the greatest moments in our relationship with Him…and we can often make some of our biggest blunders!

ULTIMATE TRUST

As a church, we have been on a journey for some 173 years, and I'm proud to tell you that we have not arrived yet. What?? Does that mean I wish we could go on struggling with various needs and difficulties that come our way indefinitely? Absolutely not! But I would not forsake the opportunity to know that God is guiding us in the path of His choosing. And, even as others who have gone before us have discovered, quite often it is in the midst of the journey that we learn some of the most significant lessons of life. We are being called to trust—not me as your pastor, or the staff that serves this church, or the deacons who minister among you—but God Himself. It is He Who began this journey nearly two centuries ago for this church and it will be He Himself Who completes it. So, before we start fretting so much about whether or not we have accomplished what we want or have arrived at the place we desire, may we each seek the heart of God and ask Him what it is that He wants to teach us where we are today. We are certain of this—we will never pass this way again. Wouldn't it be tragic to miss some of the greatest blessings and truths God may have for us by longing to be where we are not? And yet, at the same time, isn't it comforting to know that if God is driving this church, that He will most certainly get us to our destination?!? He always has. Never lose sight of that.

GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY

For the last several months, the youth have been studying the Book of Acts, looking at how to live missional lives. We finished Acts this past week by looking at the last two chapters. Chapters 27-28 are filled with detailed descriptions of Paul’s journey to Rome as a prisoner. In the midst of this detail, we recognize that when God gives you a task, He will see you through until it’s completion. Remember the key verse of the Book is Acts 1:8, “You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria and the uttermost parts of the earth”. Not only is this the key verse, but it can also be used as an outline for the Book. You can easily track the progress of the Gospel message as people were dispersed into Jerusalem and then into both Judea and Samaria and later to the uttermost parts of the world (i.e. Rome).

Paul has completed the task he was assigned and now has one final witnessing platform in Rome. Acts 23:11 records Paul’s obedience and his final task, “Take courage, for as you have solemnly witnessed to My cause at Jerusalem, so you must witness in Rome also.” Paul was commissioned to be a witness in Rome, and God will see His plan completed.

CIRCUMSTANCES DON’T MATTER...

No doubt the sailing to Rome didn’t go as planned. The trip quickly turned dangerous, and the ship and the crew were at the mercy of the weather. At the start of the voyage, however, God used the Roman centurion, Julius, and his kindness toward Paul to allow believers to minister to Paul’s needs. It wouldn’t be unfathomable to think Paul was wounded, hungry, and had other physical needs that needed attention from those at Sidon just before the trip across the Mediterranean. (This is a great picture of what Jesus meant in Matthew 25:31-46 by meeting the needs of “these brothers of mine”.) What would have happened to Paul if Julius refused to let him have his physical needs met? Would Paul have made the journey alive if it wasn’t for the kindness of Julius? God had a plan for Paul, and He used Julius as one instrument to see His purpose carried through.

Later in the trip, when shipwreck was unavoidable, God directed the ship’s path toward Malta where natives welcomed the passengers with a kindled fire, fighting off the cold and the rain. Even a poisonous snakebite was not powerful enough to keep God from fulfilling His purpose for Paul in Rome.

...BUT A COMMITTED LIFE DOES

So, what does this mean for us? How can we apply the last two chapters of Acts to our lives and our church? First, we must focus on our purpose. Just like a runner who races toward the finish line, we must keep our eyes focused on our evangelistic purpose. When the evangelism flame is turned down, other issues arise keeping us from fulfilling our purpose. Paul was encouraged during the entire trip to Rome because he knew God’s purpose for him. Difficult winds, an impossible northeastern storm, shipwreck, cold, and a venomous snakebite could not distract Paul from his purpose. How many things in life keep you from fulfilling God’s purpose? How often do you get discouraged because things don’t go as planned? Remember, God has a bigger plan than you or I could ever see. Therefore, remain faithful to the cause, and let God see you through. Secondly, we must latch on to the final words of the Book of Acts, “Preaching the kingdom of God and teaching concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all openness, unhindered.” These last details should keep us focused on our purpose and rebuke us when we become disobedient. Our lives should be characterized by preaching the kingdom of God, teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ, and doing so with openness and boldness. Therefore, stay faithfully focused on the task, prayerfully remembering that God is in control, and be unashamedly dependent upon the Holy Spirit for unhindered bold speech.

This month, we celebrate the return of spring and Saint Patrick’s Day. We have new life that will be sprouting very soon, reminding us that God wants us to grow in faith and keep on becoming what He has designed for each of us. What better way to do this than to read and study the Bible. The library has very good commentaries and other study materials waiting to be checked out. We also have other books that can help us grow in faith and be able to communicate our beliefs to others. Saint Patrick's Day is held in honor of Saint Patrick, the missionary who brought Christianity to the Irish people in the 400's AD. Are we ready to take the Christian faith to those around us? Come to the library and see what is there to aid us in our quest to be all that God wants us to be.

In the Company of Others By Jan Karon

In Jan Karon's latest in the Father Tim Series, Episcopal priest Timothy Kavanagh, the moral center of the Mitford series by Karon, hops the Atlantic for a long anticipated vacation in the Irish countryside. He and his wife settle in at Broughadoon, a B&B run by Liam and Anna Conor in County Sligo, and Father Tim is happy to be reacquainted with his ancestral homeland. He's particularly taken with Catharmore, a sprawling 19th-century estate that was Liam's childhood home. When their stay is extended because of an injury, the Kavanaghs pass the time reading up on Catharmore's history, helping out around the grounds, and getting to know the area's many colorful characters. Father Tim assumes the role of confidant and adviser to the Conors and their extended family, investigating a burglary, helping unburden Liam and Anna of long-held secrets, and aiding Liam's alcoholic mother to recover her lost faith. The first Father Tim Series book, Home to Holly Springs, is also in the library.

QUITE A START

Well, 2011 has come in with a roar! As I write this to you, I'm staring out the window of my home office looking at a pile of snow some 6-8 inches deep! I love snow—just not ice. As a child, I remember making snow cream, but we always had to wait until the second or third good snow

because we were told that it wasn't good to eat the first one because it was “full of dirt” (I'm no

scientist, so I have no idea whether or not that's true, but that's what we were told). And, of course,

the number one rule of making snow cream was to never use discolored snow...especially yellow!

I loved going outside at night and listening to the snow fall. That's right…listening to it fall. That's a

fairly foreign concept in the city or suburbs, because there is always noise that claims your attention.

But out in the country, late at night, there was nothing but silence. It seemed that everything was

asleep—either for the night or for the winter. And, if you listened carefully, you could hear the

snow gently landing.

A QUIET START

Is that what you need this year? Do you need some silence so that you can hear the still small sound of the voice of God speaking to you? A similar need arose in the life of a great man of God named Elijah. Elijah had prophesied that there would be no rain upon the earth, and there was a great drought on account of the idolatry of the people. Then, the Lord told Elijah to challenge the prophets of Baal and Ashera to a 'showdown' ,if you will, on top of Mount Carmel. After the spectacular triumph of God over the prophets of Baal and Ashera listed in 2 Kings 18 and the subsequent slaughter of those false prophets, Elijah finds himself threatened by the queen. He flees for his life, and in chapter 19, he is found on Mount Horeb.

It's here on Mount Horeb, far from where Elijah was serving—in fact, one might say 'in the wilderness'—that he encounters God. However, Elijah learns something of God that we would do well to learn, and that is in the midst of your pain, suffering, discouragement, and even desperation, the voice of God thought of as thunderous can actually be gentle and subtle. Make no mistake—God can be loud when He wants…remember Sinai? But when we're hurting…or even running, it is often through the gentleness of His quiet voice that our attention is drawn.

GOT QUIET?

If you're looking to hear the voice of God because of your current situation in life, stop looking for the thunderous blasts or the lightening flashes. Get alone with Him—perhaps in the wilderness somewhere—and wait for Him to speak to you through His Word. Just like the freshness of new fallen snow, His Word will comfort you, clean you, and rejuvenate you for the journey before you.

A LASTING REPUTATION

When I was a teenager, it seemed no one knew where my hometown was located. When asked where I was from, my reply would always demand more detail such as, “near Joplin, which is near Springfield and close to Branson.” Sometimes I would simply say, “From the southwest corner of Missouri.”

However, in 1989, a football tradition started in Webb City. Due to great coaching and the efforts of hard-working players, my town won their first state title. From that point on, Webb City had a football reputation. Now when the question, “Where are you from?” arises, those inquiring often replay to my answer with, “Oh yeah, they have a good football team”. Webb City’s football tradition has given them a reputation.

I am also asked, “How does Webb City do it—how do they always produce winning teams?” The answer is found in the tradition that started over 20 years ago. Elementary school children now sit in the stands watching and dreaming of the day when they become a Cardinal. Not only did the tradition produce a reputation, but the tradition also produced an expectation for future Cardinals to work hard in order for the tradition to continue.

ONE WAY...AND IT’S FREE

In Romans 9 and 10, Paul discusses some pretty difficult issues. Chapter 9, no doubt, is heavily debated and can be controversial. Chapter 9, I believe, deals with the reality that some people will never be saved. This reality should:

1. Break our heart, as it did Paul’s (9:1-3);

2. Not make us think that God has failed but instead that He is working according to a greater plan (9:6-26); and,

3. Cause us to be thankful for Jesus, Who can be received by faith but is unfortunately rejected by many (9:27-33).

In Chapter 10, Paul defines how a person can obtain righteousness. Even though this righteousness is “near us” (10:7) and can be received, many will still refuse salvation and righteousness that is based on faith in Jesus alone. Paul makes it clear that:

1. Whoever calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved (10:13);

2. They cannot call unless they hear—preachers have been sent (10:14-15); and,

3. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of Christ (10:17).

The following verse, Romans 10:18, says, “But I say, surely they have never heard, have they? Indeed they have; their voice has gone out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.” What a testimony to these preachers!

SHARE THE GIFT OF LIFE

Notice the emphasis on the verbal word. Acts of service and kind gestures will never take the place of the spoken Word that gives people the opportunity to believe and be saved. There also is no geographical limitation to their impact—the whole world heard because of their obedience. The question is, “Will First Baptist Church of Greenwood, Missouri have the same testimony?” Will nations, tribes, and tongues have no excuse for being saved because they have heard the Word but simply refused to believe in Jesus? Will we start a tradition in 2011 by sharing the Word of Christ with the world so that future FBC Greenwood generations will follow in our footsteps and continue the tradition? Will we be known as the church filled with “beautiful feet”?

In today’s world, there is no excuse for not taking the Word of Christ to the world. Even people who are forced to stay home have opportunities to tell others about Jesus by using the telephone through the North American Mission Board. We can all go, give, and pray. We all must be obedient. Let’s start a tradition in 2011! If you want to be part of this tradition, please let me know, and I will gladly share with you the opportunities before us.

MISTAKES

In Nehemiah 8, we have recorded the establishment of a newly recurring event in the reading of the Scriptures. The people were coming back from exile in Babylon. They had lost family and friends during the destruction of Jerusalem—not to mention having witnessed their one-time brother, Israel, being destroyed at the hands of the Assyrians. The Temple was in ashes, the walls were mere rubble, and the prospects for reclaiming the glory of old seemed beyond imagination. Now that they were being allowed to return to the land which God had at one time given them, how could they insure that they would not repeat the mistakes of their fathers?

RE-DEDICATIONS

How could they make their way secure? By keeping the Word of the Lord. They sent for Ezra in order that he might read the Law to them. And, they inclined their ears to the reading of the Word from early in the morning until the middle of the day. As far as the Jews were concerned, there was nothing in life more pressing or important than hearing what God had said, and doing it. Surely, standing there amidst the newly rebuilt city walls, the people had a very poignant reminder of what happens when you forget the One Who has been the source of your blessing and provision. Thus, they sought to re-establish their community upon the reading of the Word of God.

RESOLUTIONS

And so should we! This year, let's make a renewed focus to be a people of the Book. Let's place the reading and living of the Word at center stage in our lives, our homes, and our church. Perhaps this would be a good time to renew family, couples, or personal devotion times. We have various ideas and resources to aid you in drawing closer to God through spending time in His Word. If we can help you in this or any other area, please don't hesitate to contact the office. I pray God's richest blessings upon you this year as you seek to follow His leading in your life.

EXTENDING THE MINISTRY OF FBCG TO…

“The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything…” (Acts 17:24-25).

This passage of scripture reminds us that God does not need our “worship”, nor does He require an elaborate place to dwell in, in order to be worshiped. This scripture also reminds us that while ministry does happen in the church, the majority of ministry should be taking place outside its four walls. God is not limited to one structure, nor should the ministry He gives us be limited to a certain facility. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you an opportunity God has given me to expand the ministry of First Baptist Church of Greenwood too…

MY SHORT STORY

Over the last few years, the Lord has placed a burden on me to not only serve God but also to serve my country. Some time ago, I inquired about becoming a Chaplain in the National Guard. The door never opened, and I assumed this was not of God until I bumped into a local youth pastor who currently serves as a Chaplain in the Air Force Reserves. I asked a few questions, and my interests quickly peaked again.

As I researched this ministry, discussed it with Deanna, and sought the Lord’s leadership, the door never closed as it had earlier. Finally, after discussing the issue with our personnel committee and after a vote of support from the church, I submitted my application in April 2010. After loads of paperwork, an interview, and an oath of office, I am now a Chaplain in the United States Air Force Reserves.

A BRIEF EXPLANATION

What does this mean for me, for my family, and for you? First, I must fulfill two training sessions within the next two years. I will attend a four-week Commissioned Officer Training soon and a six-week Chaplaincy Training some time next year. Secondly, it means I must fulfill my commitment to the USAFR and serve 24 days each year. I will serve a two-week period (12 days) and then work out a schedule to serve another 12 days. These 12 days could be consecutive or divided throughout the year. During this time, youth ministry at FBCG will continue without any disruption because of dedicated sponsors who love working with teenagers. Of course, this commitment may demand deployment. If this is the case, someone will be brought in to serve in my place and take charge of youth responsibilities.

In terms of my family, I am grateful for Deanna who has supported me for the last 10 years of youth ministry and who is now looking forward along with me to the doors of ministry the Lord will open. She is quite the household manager, so things should operate as normal around the Dawson ranch. There will, however, be opportunities to minister to her and my boys (talk to me for more details).

What about you, my church family. In the past few months, I have started to see the value of military chaplains. As I have interviewed, asked questions, and researched, I have realized the Church often is clueless about military life and how to minister to those who serve our country. This opportunity also gives me a chance to share with you the spiritual needs and conditions of our military men and women. This may even translate into an opportunity for missions partnering with the base Chapel (Vacation Bible School, Back Yard Bible Clubs, etc).

What a privilege it is to serve the local church and now my country. I ask you to pray as new adventures in the gospel ministry await us…that would be me, my family, and you!

GOALS

As I was setting some goals for 2011, I started thinking of New Year’s resolutions. I don’t believe that I have ever really made a New Year’s resolution…have you?

The celebration of the New Year is thought to be the oldest of holidays, started by the ancient Babylonians around 4,000 years ago, and was celebrated on what is now March 23^rd. This was the beginning of the new growing season—the start of plant life coming back from winter—and, therefore, it made sense for it to be the start of a new year. They, too, made new year’s resolutions. The most common was to return borrowed farm equipment. Got any farm equipment you need to return?

CELEBRATIONS

We are creatures of habit that learn better by repetition, and as the years come and go, the coming and going of holidays continually reminds us of what we should be thankful for here on earth.

We have just celebrated Thanksgiving—the abundance of what God has given to us and Christmas—the birth of our Savior, and now we are looking at another new year.

LIVING FOR TODAY

The thing about a new year is its uncertainty. We can set new goals (like getting Joe’s plow back to him) which give us a purpose and direction, but we are not assured of days that we have not lived. We look forward to a new year, but we should also remember that we live day to day.

Just before Jesus ascended to heaven, the disciples asked Him when the kingdom would be restored to Israel. He told them that it wasn’t for them to know the times or the seasons which the Father has put in His power. What He said next is what He wanted them to focus on and should be our main focus today.

We are called to be a witness and to testify of what Jesus has done for us to all who will hear, from here to the ends of the world, each and every day.

We have more control over what we are doing moment by moment, so may the coming of this New Year remind you of the new beginning God has given you through Jesus Christ and the command we have been given to share the Gospel…right now. Happy New Year!

What a wonderful blessing God worked through His body at FBCG for five local families in need this Christmas! And, what better way to celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus, than by giving gifts to help others. A total of $1,010.00 was donated, along with many toys, to be divided between the families. Thank you to all who gave and donated—may you be as blessed as those who received these gifts!

A big thank-you, too, to the Grandview Elks Club who came to us with a desire to donate to our fund for these families, as well as to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation for the wonderful toys they donated!

CELEBRATIONS

As we have just finished the time of year when we celebrate all of the various things for which we have to be thankful, we turn our attention upon one of the greatest events of all time (comparable only to the resurrection of Christ which we celebrate at Easter). This is an incredibly special time of year as families gather together in homes and churches. It's a time when our sense of community is heightened. But why? What's so special about the birth of a child, even one as special as Jesus, such that we should be drawn together to celebrate?

MAKE ROOM

Certainly there are large numbers of people throughout the world who find this just another 'convenient' time for a vacation. In fact, such an attitude is very well illustrated by the transition in terminology witnessed this time each year. At one point, people spoke freely of "Christmas," and now they speak more of "holidays"; a generic signification of virtually nothing of specific consequence. Now I do not mean to simply rail upon the notion of transitioning terminologies regarding the advent season, but I bring this up for a specific purpose.

MAKE TIME

You will note from the passage that Joseph and Mary were drawn to Bethlehem as the result of an edict which reminded everyone of their communal origins. Thus, each man was to return to the city of his birth. While the occasion was problematic, as it was time to be registered for taxation, it was also a time of great family celebration as families who had not seen one another in years might once again be drawn together. Yet something of great significance is noted here with reference to the birth of Jesus, "there was no place for them in the inn." In the midst of the hustle and bustle, there was no room for Jesus. What about today? What about in your home? Is there room for Jesus?

I hope that you celebrate the birth of Jesus with your family and loved ones in a very special way this year. As you do, make sure that you make time to focus upon the One for Whom the season was established. He is the source of our community. It was God Who brought the Israelites together in the first place, and yet they had no place for Him when He came. Do you have a place in your life for the God Who called you—for the God Who died to save you?

May you be blessed this Christmas time with the presence of Christ in your life and in your home. And, may you always share with others the One Who makes us one.

Karen Kingsbury was encouraged to write about autism and the many problems involved because of a young man she met who became "unlocked" through acting. I recommend this book. Diane Reynolds.

COMMITTED IS AS COMMITTED DOES

Several years ago, the movie Forrest Gump was produced and will probably be one of history’s greatest films. The movie follows a small boy as he grows from childhood, through high school, a war in Vietnam, and into adulthood. Throughout the movie, Forrest would be called, “stupid”. Anytime someone would suggest, “Are you stupid or something?”, he would reply, “Stupid is as stupid does.” Even though Forest never fit the mold so many tried to force him into, he stayed confident in who he was and his current objective. His simple response has many deep truths. We must consider the question, “Are you committed?” In recent weeks, I have been around a variety of students who call themselves Christians. If you asked them, “Are committed or something?”, they probably would reply, “yes”, but their actions would say otherwise.

I have seen different youth ministries in my short time in the ministry, and there seems to be two basic categories of teenagers…content and committed. When trying to figure out why some teenagers are content with being content, I always end up seeing a bigger picture. When teenagers are part of a church that is content with the status quo, they take on the same attitude and commitment level. However, when I see a church with adults who understand ministry and who model Christ-like behavior, I see a youth ministry mimic the same mindset.

EXAMPLES

In 1 Thessalonians 1, Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy wrote to the church of the Thessalonians who were praised for becoming imitators of them. This church not only received the Word in much tribulation, but they also became an example for other churches as the Word sounded forth from them. What an honor it must have been to be the “example” church.

This passage reminds me of a few things. Being the example church isn’t about having the latest technology, ample financial resources, the most modern facilities, or the latest worship style. It is about being who God has called us to be in Christ Jesus. This church turned from idols to God and waited for the glorious return of His Son. It also reminds me that if we want to be the example, we must also be willing to be the church that sounds forth the Gospel message. On a side note, isn’t it interesting that the first praise the authors give is for their evangelistic commitment?

In a day where so many people compare churches—myself included—we must regain our focus and evaluate ourselves only through God’s eyes. Instead of comparing our church to those around us, we need to take a good hard look at who we are and ask, “Are we being an example to our OWN church?” The question from my point of view is, “Are we being an example to our teenagers and children who model what they see?” Committed is as committed does?

TOUGH QUESTIONS

Allow me to ask you a few tough questions. Are you being an example to young Christians in evangelism? Are you living a life of purity so that others following after you have a model Christian to learn from? Is your speech that of someone who is identified with Christ? Are you a man of integrity? Are you a woman of character? Our teenagers need people to model a Christ-like life, and learning from older brothers and sister in Christ is far better than the other option. You can make a difference in the future…will you be that person? Oh yeah, committed is as committed does.

UPDATE ON OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

We had our Operation Christmas Child all church packing party last month, and it was well attended. We put together 201 boxes in 1½ hours. Praise the Lord! Many children will benefit from all your donations and labor. Thanks to all who gave of themselves so children around the world will see God's love in action. At last count, we had 223 filled boxes. Don't forget to pray for the children who receive a box, as well as to pray for their families. We will begin working on Operation Christmas Child for next year in January. THE WONDER OF GOD
       The wonder and beauty of God’s creation amazes me at every turn…every animal, every insect, every plant, and every location of the world with its unique landscape. Every season with its own characteristic shows God’s magnificent power. The heavens are a marvel of their own. Except for the depths of the oceans, we can touch, see, and feel all that is on the earth, but the heavens for us are untouchable. The moon is as far as a man has traveled, and we still haven’t touched its surface with the skin of our hands. Without some form of protection, we would perish.
It is a place that mankind of all ages have wondered about and gazed upon only at a distance. We stand and look to the heavens knowing that God is out there on His throne keeping everything in order.
David starts this Psalm, “O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! Who hast set thy glory above the heavens.” God’s glory is truly above the heavens.
The heavens have always been bigger than what I could ever imagine. Growing up looking at the stars, learning that some of what I thought were stars were planets and then being able to see pictures of those planets taken from telescopes was beyond belief. It cannot but make you feel small. What is man that thou art mindful of him?

THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD
Man has so often been arrogant when it comes to what we think we know. God has given us the ability to advance in technologies that show us greater and more spectacular things. Most of the time what He allows us to see disproves what we thought we knew, and all of the time it shows us more and more of His awesome and mighty power. I looked at a photo of what NASA calls “galaxies galore” from the Hubble telescope, and what that single photo shows in perspective is about the size of a quarter being held up at arms length to the heavens. In that spot are thousands of galaxies. Not thousands of stars. Not thousands of solar systems. Thousands of galaxies that have billions of stars in each one. Standing and looking at the sky at night, how many quarters can fill the sky at an arms length? And, now, don’t forget the other side of the earth in the opposite direction! All that God has created. What is man, that thou art mindful of him? Every time I experience or see a new part of His creation, it humbles me more and more.

THE LOVE OF GOD
       Of all that is in God’s creation, He sent His Son to die for us. No matter how insignificant you may feel, no matter how alone you may feel, remember this—Christ died for you and He died for me.
       We may never fully understand His love for us, but be assured it is there…as sure as the stars and moon, it is there…and we have been given the command to share that love to all. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

THANKSGIVING

As we approach this season of Thanksgiving, we certainly have a good deal for which to be thankful. The Lord has blessed us richly this past year. He has seen us through some very trying times and blessed us with His abundant provision and guidance. This year, we adopted a new constitution and a new organizational structure, elected some new men to serve as deacons, made some much needed improvements and repairs upon our facilities, started a new AWANA outreach program, and many other exciting things which time and space will not permit me to enumerate. Truly, we serve an awesome and faithful God! May His great Name be praised!

PRAISE

That's exactly what we should be doing this month. As we gather corporately to worship or as we gather privately among our families, let us make sure to take some special time to thank the Lord for being our ever-present help in time of need. As of this past month, we are officially 173 years old! (That's old even by Old Testament standards!) The flame of our testimony is still burning bright, but it will burn even brighter yet! As I watched our men gather together at the work days and the breakfast, there was tremendous camaraderie. As our ladies prepare to depart on another weekend of spiritual renewal, there are bonds being forged. Day by day, step by step, we are becoming more and more the church God desires for us to be.

EXCITEMENT

So get excited, church, because God is moving in our midst! May His Name be forever praised!

STUDENTS THAT GROW

In the past year, I have been challenged to really look in depth at our student ministry at FBCG. This verse has been one of those challenges and one that gives us some insight into what student ministry must look like. It also gives us a challenge to see our students become more than just big kids who are often given the excuse to act immature because they hear adults suggest, “Well, they are just kids”. In the previous passage we find that Jesus’ age is 12, yet He was much more that just a 12-year-old kid who was expected to act silly. Let’s take a brief look into this verse.

JUST LIKE JESUS

Just like Jesus, our students are growing in stature. We have some of the healthiest strongest teenagers on the planet. In a culture that emphasizes sports as much as we do, it is not uncommon to see strong healthy teenagers. When I attend high school athletic events, it always amazes me to see how physically fit teenagers are today. No doubt our teenagers are growing in stature.

When it comes to growing in wisdom, however, I’m not so sure our teens are. Sure they may excel in school, but when it comes to Biblical, Godly, time-tested wisdom, I’m afraid our teens (ALL TEENS) are falling quite short. Helping our teens grow in wisdom must be a top priority in our church. But it cannot begin at 12…it must start from birth. This demands that parents get involved spiritually in a child’s life first and then partner with the church to see a child grow in wisdom. One author I’ve been reading asked a group of parents, “Do you consider yourselves as the primary spiritual developer in your teenager’s life?” They all answered, “Yes.” When he asked how they fulfilled that role, they replied, “We bring them to you, you are the youth pastor.” I’m afraid that this is the norm in our society and culture today. The most involvement a parent may have in their child’s spiritual life is simply driving them to church and then picking them up when they are done.

Jesus also grew in favor with God. As a church, we must be committed to help our children grow in favor with God. Again, we can’t wait until they are teenagers to get them on track with God—we must start when they are children by helping them have a healthy relationship with Him. In the previous passage, Jesus was willing to spend time in the temple rather than hanging with his friends. Moreover, He was willing to have spiritual discussions with older men in the temple. What a sight it will be when we have young boys sitting with older men discussing spiritual topics over Kool-Aid and coffee.

Lastly, Jesus grew in favor with men. Not only did Jesus earn the spiritual respect of the men around Him, but I believe He earned the respect of men in general. My wife and I recently attended a Lee’s Summit West football game. As I made my way across the front of the stadium, I had to step over the legs of teenagers who were piled up in the main aisle of the stadium. Instead of having plenty of room to navigate across the stadium, people were forced into a small corridor between the metal railing and stinky teenage feet. My wife was sitting with our youngest boy, Aaron, while watching two teenagers stand in front of her right in front of a “No Standing Please” sign. She finally had to ask them to move so she could watch the halftime presentation. Each time I go to an area heavily populated with teenagers, I notice a rudeness about them; an attitude that says, “This is my area, stay out – I don’t care about you”. I hope I was not this way. A picture of our future youth ministry will show a program that teaches and trains teenagers to be aware of their surroundings—namely people. They need to be taught common courtesies that have been long forgotten (probably even by me) in an effort to earn the respect of adults.

DOING OUR PART

In the previous passage we also see community. Jesus traveled in a caravan of neighbors from His community and was conversing with temple leaders who were willing to give time to a 12-year-old. Jesus was involved with small children and adults. Today, teenagers are often left by themselves to figure out life and often learn the hard way. I am excited to see what the Lord may do through our ministry to children and youth in the near future. Will you join with me in seeing our boys become men and our girls become ladies—by age 12?

There are so many things for which to be thankful, and November gives us the opportunity to voice our thanksgiving. God has blessed us with a Savior who gives us a new direction in life. We are free to worship, we have the Bible to freely read and keep in our homes, we have homes, and we are free to raise our families. Our church and the leaders are a blessing to us, our families, and the community. Don't let a day go by that you don't see the blessings God has allowed us to enjoy. We have the freedom to read what we choose to read. Within the church is the church library with many selections for all ages. Take time this month to enrich your lives and read a book! This month we celebrate National Bible Week and National Family Week. What a good time to study the Bible and use the resources in the library. Encourage your children to read good wholesome books from the library, or enjoy reading some books to your children.

EASY AS 1, 2, 3

It’s as easy as one, two, three.

First, listen to a child and see if they can quote from memory the next verse in their book.

Second, help the child understand the verse with the definition of key words given in the book.

Third, sign your name and date it.

Oh, I didn’t mention the fourth step, did I. Receive a blessing more incredible than you can imagine!

We have children wanting to learn Bible verses. Let me say that again, we have children wanting to learn Bible verses; and the more “listeners” we have, the more they are able to learn and understand God’s word.

There is nothing like helping someone—no matter what their age—to understand what God wants to give them…eternal life. There is nothing special about AWANA. What makes it special is the commitment that is given by the workers.

ETERNAL INVESTMENT

We have some very dedicated workers, and we greatly appreciate them. We need to understand that it is more than doing it for the AWANA program, more than doing it because there is a need, more than doing it for the church, and more than doing it because it makes you feel good. It is for eternity. The result of the AWANA program will be eternal life for some of the children in the program, for some of their families, and for those they are then equipped to share the Gospel with.

OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME… LITERALLY

You will have an opportunity to share the Gospel every single Wednesday night to more than one child, as well as to make a contact with their parents. It’s kind of like visitation without the intimidation of having to knock on the door of someone that you don’t know because it’s all done in surroundings familiar to you with your church family by your side.

It’s as easy as one, two, three. Prayerfully consider just one night at AWANA.

Son of Hamas

Mosab Hassan (Joseph) Yousef is the son of Sheikh Hassan Yousef, a founding leader of Hamas, internationally recognized as a terrorist organization and responsible for countless suicide bombings and other deadly attacks against Israel. He was imprisoned several times by the Israeli internal intelligence service. After an encounter with a British tourist, he started a 6-year quest that jeopardized Hamas, endangered his family, and threatened his life.

Everything changed when Mosab embraced the teachings of another famous Middle East leader, Jesus Christ. His belief now is that the mandate to “love your enemies” is the only way to peace in the Middle East.

FAMILY REUNIONS

Last weekend, our family gathered together for our annual reunion. It's the one opportunity we have each year to get away as a family and focus upon relationships with one another. But for some reason, it seems we have difficulty focusing upon enjoying one another. (Perhaps your family does it better, but we're trying.) The focus instead seems to be more about making everything happen (i.e. breakfast, lunch, supper, breakfast again, etc.), and each year, a handful feel like they do all the work while the majority just take it all in. Instead of communicating and changing, those few just grumble and make everyone around them feel small because of their discontent.

Now keep in mind, this is just a regular ordinary family. There's nothing special about us. And, I would bet that many reading this could relate to such gatherings. What I want to draw your attention to is the fact that most families have these same kinds of struggles. Well, it's no different within the church. Families tend to struggle in various areas, but they don't stop being a family because of it. Instead, they find ways of working together toward changing things for the better.

VERBAL ABUSE

There's really only one thing that can threaten the unity of the family, and that's the tongue. Without question, no singular item lends itself so readily toward the absolute destruction of a relationship as quickly as does the tongue. Perhaps that's why James says that it is set on fire by Hell itself! I have witnessed more damage wrought within families and churches by loose-lipped individuals bent on 'sharing a piece of their mind' (which all too often leaves them with far too little to function) than any other single thing. In fact, I believe that is exactly why Paul includes this area in his treatise in Ephesians 4:29.

Here Paul exhorts the church not only to not speak a word which is unwholesome or worthless, but also to use words which will build up. This simple principle has applications in every single area of life. If you were to use this in the workplace, undoubtedly there would be a change in the attitude of those around you. Have you ever known someone who could brighten the entire room just by leaving it? You could be the type of person who brings delight with you wherever you go.

FAMILY TIES

In a family, you really don't have the option of not associating with the rest of the family (they call those types of families 'dysfunctional', and that is typically frowned upon in society). And, the love relationship shared between members of the family ought to govern the way in which they respond to one another in communication. One who readily castigates, critiques, and insults a family member shows himself/herself to be an outsider and not one who values the family as a whole. But the family member heeds the wisdom of Paul and seeks to build up his/her brothers and sisters in an effort to see them become their best. The focus is not upon the event, it's upon the people. In a day when people are looking for authentic relationships, being genuinely Christ-like in our interaction will go a long ways toward drawing those around us into our family!

EVANGELISM

Halloween is my least favorite day of the year. While it is fun to watch children dress up in funny costumes, it is bothersome to see so many people celebrate evil. Haunted houses will soon be open, giving customers bloodcurdling experiences. My haunted house experiences are very few and quite amusing, simply because I rarely got scared. In fact, some were so lame I starting scaring the workers instead of falling for their silly predictable surprises. No matter how lame these experiences may be, the goal is the same—to hide behind something, jump out, and catch your suspects by surprise.

On a more serious note, the danger of death lurks behind stop signs, on the other side of the road, in hospitals, and in drugs, alcohol, obsessions, and even hobbies. Every day, death sneaks up and unexpectedly takes hold of people. Alcohol takes the lives of the addicted and the innocent every day. Overeating and a lack of discipline take the lives of those who refuse to take care of their bodies. No one—children, teens, or adults—can hide from death. The question is, are you ready when you face death? Many of you reading this article are. In fact, there are some who look at death like Dirty Harry saying, “Make my day”, having assurance that your last day on earth is your first day in heaven. But for many, death is coming quickly to usher them into hell. Both as Christians and as a church we must be burdened for the lost and then respond by sharing with others how they can receive eternal life through Jesus Christ.

OPPORTUNITIES

Members of FBCG have two opportunities to pull needy souls from hell’s grip. Our first opportunity is G·R·O·W Outreach (God Rewards Our Work). If we are going to see people saved from eternal death and see people added to our congregation, then we must get to work. G·R·O·W Outreach ministry is quite simple. It asks volunteers to commit to one night each month for one hour and fifteen minutes. During that time, some will make visits, some will make phone calls, and others will write letters. We even need childcare so young families can get involved. Every member of FBC Greenwood needs to be involved in G·R·O·W Outreach in some way or the other.

Your next opportunity is Sunday October 31st when we worship with our KDO families. We will combine this day with Fall Fest, where the entire Greenwood community will be invited to participate. There will be a bounce house, games, and food. Last year, we attempted something new and held Fall Fest on the south side of the church, and we saw many new families come through our parking lot. Below is a list of items we will need:

— Candy — Hot dogs/hot dog buns

— Fish-fryer for funnel cakes

— People to oversee games and activities

— People to judge costume contests

— Car trunks for trunk-n-treat

— Cash donations for prizes/equipment

INVOLVEMENT

These two evangelistic outreaches give our church the opportunity to reach our community. The question is, “Will you be involved in making an eternal difference in your community?” Be looking for more information on Fall Fest. And, if you haven’t registered for G·R·O·W Outreach, call the church office today, and let someone know you would like to be registered. Also, be praying for opportunities to share Jesus with someone along your life’s path. Share the truth about Jesus today, giving others the opportunity to accept Him and be freed from the sting of death.

We will gather as a church family to pack our Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes on November 13th at 1:00 p.m. We still need small toys (yo-yos, cars, balls, etc.), toothbrushes and toothpaste, washcloths, soap, calculators, baby dolls, etc. Please leave any items you are donating in the library. The Buildings, Grounds, and Vehicles (BGV) Committee is pleased to report that the Work Day was a great success! The foyer was brightened with a fresh coat of paint, a few miscellaneous projects were completed, and the old sidewalks on the east side of the building were removed and replaced. Many thanks to all who participated on these projects on Work Day and to those who helped prepare and who cleaned up afterwards. The walls and doors for fire separation are nearly complete. Thanks also to those who helped frame the walls, hang the sheet rock, and set the door frames. The electrical work and fire alarm work is complete, and we now have a 24/7 monitoring company that is watching over our facility electronically. Thanks also goes out to our subcontracted helpers from Guiding Light Electric, Brattin drywall, Jeff (Bo) Dalton our hardware installer, Carter Glass Company who donated our fire lite glass units, and Cindy Guir from CMG Engineering for our water line study. We will soon submit our request again to Water District #13. And, finally, a big thank-you to Terry Young for all his work on the sidewalks. BGV Committee

NEW OPPORTUNITIES

Well, we're off and running! A new start to a new school year! As the kids are busy working at their studies, we are beginning our final approach toward AWANA. If you have not already done so, I would encourage you to contact Brother Leonard to find out how you can be a part of this exciting and vital new outreach for our church. The timing for this could not be better as we engage families in our communities through their children. AWANA has a strong reputation throughout our country, and many in our community have expressed an interest in being a part of just such a program at our church.

If we view our community the way missionaries view their field of service, we would quickly assess that the key way in which to connect with our field is through children's ministries. The entry point for this is AWANA. It is fashioned to be an evangelistic tool to serve as the primary contact with those around us. This DOES NOT replace the need for other children's programs such as R.A.'s, G.A.'s, Mission Friends, etc., but rather it complements them, as this will serve as the funnel through which new children will pass into those great discipleship programs.

THE GREAT COMMISSION

While the church accomplishes many things in its existence, nothing comes close to the singular focus of fulfilling the Great Commission. Without doing this, we have no hope of continuing in order to do the other things which are enjoyed by all. Throughout our process of restructuring, we have sought to make things more focused upon our primary purposes of Go(ing), Know(ing), and Grow(ing). AWANA represents our primary effort in Go(ing) as regard to reaching the families within our Jerusalem. That is not to say that we will not be engaged in other areas of our Judea/Samaria and even the "uttermost parts of the earth". You'll hear more about those later, but if we ever needed everyone to step up to the plate in evangelism, it’s here.

TURNING THE CORNER

If we can successfully reach these children and provide a place for them during Sunday School, as well, I believe we will definitely see our ship turn the corner. I want to thank each of you who have already volunteered to be a part of this exciting opportunity, yet I want to encourage those of you who have not to jump in and be a part of this tremendous ministry.

I believe we can see the ship turn. I believe we must see it turn. And, with the Lord's guidance, we will see it turn! Thank you for all you do for the Kingdom work here at Greenwood. See you Sunday!

Oh Canada…!

O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise, the True North strong and free! From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

GOALS

It is my goal, if God keeps leading, to see our students go on mission with God, to our neighbors to the north. Northern Ontario is the most unreached people group in North America and the presence of Bible-believing evangelistic churches is very hard to find. As the Canadian National Anthem asks, “God keep our land glorious and free”. Just like the United States, Canada is a free nation, but they are not free from sin. We have the responsibility to spread the freeing good news of Jesus to our neighbors next door, neighbors across the street, neighbors to the north, the south, and across the sea. Keeping a land glorious and free can only happen when people turn to Jesus.

OPTIONS

We have three different options right now for our Canadian mission trip. My first option is to see our church go on mission together to Canada. Seniors, adults, families, and children would be invited to go and make a difference as we spread the Good News. The second option is to send our students with Super Summer Global, where they will team up with several other youth ministries and leaders to be salt and light. The third option is to partner with another church and head evangelistically north. No matter what option opens for us to take, we have no other option than to be a light to the nations. We are missing out on seeing God move in remarkable ways, and I encourage you to get involved and get on mission with God.

STEPS

So, what now? Begin to pray and see if God calls you to go on mission to Canada. Even though all the details may not be clear right now, when God calls He will open doors and provide the resources to make your trip possible. Second, consider helping financially. There is no doubt that a trip like this will have significant costs. Students who are able to go to Canada will shortly begin raising money in order to go. Maybe God has blessed you so that you can bless others helping them go on mission. God is calling you to go, to give, or maybe both…will you answer?

I liked your article in last month’s newsletter, but I’m not sure what you meant by the “fat wallets” comment toward the end. Can you clarify or have you just gone completely nuts?

Dear Concerned FBCG Member,

In my last article covering the major news item from the convention, I wrote with ‘missional’ haste and zeal. I did not heed Proverbs 19:2 saying, “Even zeal is not good without knowledge, and the one who acts hastily sins”. Soon I realized my poor word choices communicated confusion rather than clarification on where the Southern Baptist Convention is heading. In the concluding paragraphs I made the comment, “It is probably a fine time to take the money from fat wallets and place it in the hands of people working everyday with people who have no hope”. While crystal clear in my mind, I now see how some may misunderstand my intentions. Let me briefly explain what I hoped to communicate. First, I don’t believe in taking from the rich to give to the poor. Sure I love archery, but I’m no Robin Hood. Second, I understand that there are people in certain leadership positions that must be paid for their service, administration, and decisive leadership--their expertise is worth their pay. However, I do believe that we must, as a church and a convention, make it a priority to preach the gospel to the nations. For example, why would we pay one person tens of thousands of dollars to minister in a certain location when we could pay many indigenous evangelists to do the same work for the same amount of money only with greater impact? Maybe I should have said, “It is probably a fine time to think outside the box to make a greater impact through preaching the gospel to people who have no hope”. Again, if you have any questions or concerns about the Southern Baptist Convention and the direction we are heading, I would be glad to talk with you anytime. Also, please understand my proud dedication to the Cooperative Program and be reassured that Southern Baptists are also committed to it and plan on using this avenue to fulfill the Great Commission around the world.

Only one life, ‘twill soon be past…

Only what’s done for Christ will last.

For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day. II Timothy 1:12

Truth

The world has a way of taking truth and making it out to be a bad thing. It is no longer something that most people search for or something that is desired to be obtained. Truth draws a line in the sand and if you don’t stand for truth or seek and live truth, you have to fight against it to justify your actions.

Paul was given the truth—the Gospel—just as we have been given that same truth for God’s purpose from Him through Jesus Christ before the world began. Paul lived and taught that truth, and for that he was beaten, rejected, and imprisoned. You see, the truth set him apart from the world. He stood on one side of that line, and those who stood on the other had to do something to justify their rejection of the truth, so they made him out to be the bad thing.

Commitment

For many years I only saw this verse as one that confirmed my security as a believer. I knew that I had given my life to Jesus Christ and was sure that He would keep that which I had committed to Him—that being my soul, my life—for eternity. But our souls in eternity, although important, is only a small part of being a Christian. What else do we commit to Him? Hopefully it is our service for Him.

Just like Paul, we have been given the truth. We have embraced it, and we must live it and share it. He was not ashamed of what that message had caused him to have to endure.

He knew that all the work that he had done in sharing the gospel, starting churches, and teaching those churches the truth of God would not be in vain, because when God starts a work, He sees it through and finishes it. If for one moment we lose sight of this fact—the fact that it is God’s work—we have then put ourselves in control and are no longer under His guidance, care, and protection, and what we do is in vain.

Confidence

Paul was confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6). God is working on us as individuals, but it is the church…the bride of Christ…that we are brought into and through which we are made as one. It will be through us, the church, as one, that God will perform and finish the work that He has started. The truth came from God through Jesus Christ to us so that all who believe will be one in Him, in turn giving glory back to Him.

Finish the Race

God started a work here almost 173 years ago, and when I look around this community, I do not believe He has finished His work here. There are too many people who need the Gospel of Christ—so many more that need the saving power that can only come from the preaching of that Gospel from each and every one of us. What we do for Him will never be in vain, and we will never have to be ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We can be confident that all we do by Him and for Him will be kept secure and finished to the end.

GA's want to thank everyone that donated to the "Christmas in August" mission project. This finished our "Fit 4 God's Mission" theme. The girls earned their "Live Action Project" and "Fit 4 God's Mission" badges for their participation. It’s time to set sail for a new year of missions in Girls in Action! Through the Anchors Aweigh! theme, leaders and girls will learn to take God’s love to all people. Girls will set aside things that weigh them down. They’ll pull up their anchors and sail full speed ahead! GA’s will learn how missionaries use nautical and land-based ministries to share the good news. They’ll be challenged to participate in similar ministries in their communities. Girls will also learn to treat every individual as a person God created and loves. They’ll be encouraged to “navigate the course,” following missionaries’ examples. GA's is for all girls grades 1 - 6, and meets each Sunday during "Grow U" from 12:30 - 1:30. Please remember to pray for our girls and the missionaries they are learning about.

We have level 1 and 2 books available for check out. There are books relating to issues relevant to youth. Adults can't be left out—take a look at all the good books waiting for you to enjoy. There are many selections for all ages. Literacy is not enjoyed in many places around the world, so take advantage of this privilege and read good, informative, and uplifting material. Gratitude

Our priority as the body of Christ is to advance the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The details of how we obtain that goal are mostly unwritten and will take the leadership of the Holy Spirit in each of our lives and in the life of the Church as one body. I have been the recipient of help by all of you in many ways, and I want to thank you for each and every instance and manner in which you have helped me. I would never be able to remember and name everyone and all that has been done for me here, but I would like to thank Beth and Jeanie for the hours of hard work they spend cleaning the church each and every week. This frees up time for me to work in the ministry God has called me to.

The Gift of ‘Helps’

In 1Corinthians 12:28, Paul teaches how God has placed members in the body to fit together for His purpose of pressing forward with the Gospel. One of these ‘appointments’ is the gift of ‘helps’.

There are different ways to interpret ‘helps’, but I lean toward the broader definition of any act that is done in Christ’s love to benefit another. If it is truly done in Christ’s love, then it was done to magnify and lift Him up which gives Him the glory.

Many times in his writings Paul acknowledges those who helped him and those who helped other churches. Any time help is given in the love of Christ, it benefits all that are involved. The person helping is showing the selflessness and humility exhibited by Jesus Himself, and that goes to what I believe Paul was teaching about in this passage. That is, that we do not see ourselves as above anyone else in the body but equal in the way that God has put us together, functioning as one together in love.

“Weight Lifting”

The person receiving the help is relieved of something, whatever that might be. There are many burdens and tasks that come upon us that can load us down to the point of taking our eyes off of the purpose set before us. They include physical, mental, spiritual, and financial issues, as well as anything else that weighs us down. When someone relieves us of a burden, we are freed up—a weight is lifted, enabling us to focus once again on what God has given us to do.

There have been many instances of selfless acts that I have seen, and it is encouraging. It builds all of our faith as a body to see one another helping each other.

Our goal as a New Testament Church is to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to this community and around the world in the most effective way possible. We each have a vital role in how this is to be accomplished, and with God’s guidance, in love, working together, lifting one another up, I know God will bless.

Due to a last minute turn of events and a deal on airfare, Deanna and I had the privilege of representing our church at the Southern Baptist Convention in Orlando, Florida, June 12-14. The trip was a blessing for our family and helpful on a number of fronts. I appreciate the gifts that reduced our travel expenses and the prayers for traveling mercies—our two young boys were awesome on the planes.

A Great Commission Resurgence (GCR)— A Southern Baptist Report

As the title of this article suggests, the Great Commission was a major emphasis at this year’s annual meeting. Some may ask, “Why is there a need for a Great Commission Resurgence?” Personally, I have my own opinions, but I will only report those that were expressed during the convention. The Report given at the convention was based on the findings by the Great Commission Task Force. During the 2009 Annual Convention, the Messengers gave permission to SBC President, Johnny Hunt, to elect a task force to research the need for the desired Great Commission resurgence.

You have heard the phrase, “a picture is worth a thousand words”. Sometimes, numbers can do the same thing. Instead of writing hundreds of words expressing the evangelistic need of our world, I’ll let the numbers do the talking. Out of 7 billion people on earth, there are only 1 billion believing Christians. Of those 6 billion who are unbelieving, 3.5 billion people have never heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Around the world, there are 6000 people groups who have no Christian witness. In our local Greenwood community, as little as 25% of the population is saved. In the Report given, the explanation is clear, “We must see a tidal wave of evangelistic and missionary passion, or the numbers of unreached people groups will only grow, and ‘lostness’ will spread”.

The solution, according to the Great Commission Task Force, is two-fold. First, Southern Baptists must recommit to the foundation that formed the convention in order to mobilize the energies of Southern Baptists for missions and evangelism. In order for missionaries to be sent, pastors to be trained, and a host of services to be made available, money must be given to the Cooperative Program. The Report admits, “While a passion for seeing the world reached for Christ cannot be reduced to a question of money, there is no way that we can reach the world without the resources that are necessary”. Additional problem identifying statistics:

The average Southern Baptist gives 2.5% of their annual income to the local church.

SBC churches have reduced their giving to the Cooperative Program—the Report shows that SBC churches are giving an average of 6% to the Cooperative Program.

State conventions are keeping approximately 63% of those gifts.

While work is being done and people are being saved and baptized, the GCR Report confesses that keeping this amount of money for ourselves will keep us from reaching our world for Christ.

Centrality of the Gospel

Secondly, the Report encourages Southern Baptists to acknowledge the centrality of the gospel message to “everything we do and everything we are”. This basically confirms our belief that every person is a sinner and without hope. It also means that we believe that God saves sinners “by His grace and for His glory, and that our salvation is secured through the atoning life, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ…trusting in Him and in Him alone for salvation.”. This Gospel message is nothing new and rings true in the heart of every Southern Baptist, but renewed commitment doesn’t stop there. The GCR Report also affirms the primary and centrality of every SBC church as the central instrument used by the Kingdom of God and encourages each church to reconsider their missional vision to “present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to every person in the world and to make disciples of all the nations – nothing less”.

STATISTICAL PROOF

Evangelical Christians are falling behind the level of population growth; we are failing to reach the immigrant population, urban areas, young adults, and youth.

In 2008 Southern Baptists baptized 33,000 less than in 1950—yet we have 17,000 more churches. In 2008 Southern Baptists baptized 75,000 teenagers compared to 147,000 in 1972.

With each successive generation, the percentage of Christians is falling.

7 Recommendations

Below are summary statements of the seven recommendations that were presented to and passed by the 2010 Messengers at the Southern Baptist Convention.

1. The Southern Baptist Convention now has a new mission statement, “As a convention of churches, our missional vision is to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to every person in the world and to make disciples of all the nations”.

2. The following Core Values were adopted:

Christ-Likeness—We depend on the transforming power of the Holy Spirit, the Word of God, and prayer to make us more like Jesus Christ.

Truth—We stand together in the truth of God’s inerrant Word, celebrating the faith once for all delivered to the saints.

Unity—We work together in love for the sake of the Gospel.

Relationships—We tell one another the truth in love and do what we say we will do.

Future—We value Southern Baptists of all generations and embrace our responsibility to pass this charge to a rising generation in every age, faithful until Jesus comes.

Local Church—We believe the local church is given the authority, power, and responsibility to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to every person in the world.

Kingdom—We join other Christ-followers for the Gospel, the Kingdom of Christ, and the glory of God.

3.The Southern Baptist churches have been challenged to increase the percentage of their Cooperate Program giving. The same challenge is presented to the State Conventions to increase the percentage of Cooperative Program funds that are directed to the Southern Baptist Convention. Each entity of the Southern Baptist Convention is also called upon to maximize Cooperative Program funds for the task of taking the Gospel to the nations. The Lottie Moon Christmas offering designated for International Missions is set for $200 million, and the Annie Armstrong Easter offering for North American Missions is set for $100 million.

4. The GCR Report called upon Southern Baptists to affirm the North American Mission Board (NAMB) with the priority to plant churches and reach our cities and underserved regions and people groups in order to reach North America with the Gospel. Part of the refocus of the NAMB will be recognizing that most Cooperative Program funds remain in the most evangelized regions of North America and then redevelop partnerships with State Conventions in order to penetrate the ‘lostness’ in North America.

5. Currently the mission statement of the International Mission Board prohibits active involvement in mission efforts within North America, however, these boundary markers ignore the fact that “home” and “foreign” lines have disappeared with so-called “international cities” and an ever growing international population on our college and university campuses. Therefore, the GCR asks “Southern Baptists to entrust the International Mission Board with the ministry of reaching unreached and underserved people groups without regard to any geographic limitation”.

6. Because State Conventions have the mechanisms in place to collect Cooperative Program funds and promote the Cooperative Program, the GCR asks the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention to work with the State Conventions in Cooperative Program stewardship education, developing a strategy for encouraging greater participation and investment in the Cooperative Program.

7. For many years, 50% of all Cooperative Program funds received by the Southern Baptist Convention have been distributed to the International Mission Board—this means that half of all Cooperative Program receipts at the national level go to International Missions. The GCR asks Southern Baptists to raise the percentage received by the International Mission Board to 51%, confirming the desire to reach the nations.

In Conclusion

No doubt many disagreements were heard during the meeting, as well as the voices of many who affirmed our need to recommit ourselves to the Great Commission. Even in the midst of many dividing opinions, one thing stands firm—Southern Baptists are concerned with reaching people. The negative side of this report will mean that people will loose jobs, states will not have all the resources they have been spoiled with, and people will be uncomfortable with change. We will, however, see a greater emphasis on reaching the lost world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is probably a fine time to take the money from fat wallets and places it in the hands of people working every day with people who have no hope.

For us at First Baptist Church-Greenwood, our goal should be the same. We need to strive to meet our Lottie Moon Christmas offering and Annie Armstrong Easter offering goals. We need to prioritize Cooperative Program giving and, by doing so, join forces with tens of thousands of other churches in order to send thousands of missionaries into the lost world. With an urban city and several college campuses just minutes away from our front doors, we also need to commit to reaching the world that is just outside our property line. Lastly, we need to accept the mission statement “to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to every person in the world and to make disciples of all the nations”.

Greetings to you all in the Name of our Blessed Redeemer, Jesus, the Christ! As I write to you, we have just taken a monumental step forward as a church in following God’s guidance. Thank you for your prayers, questions, comments, concerns, and general interest in the direction of this local body. At the end of it all, you voted unanimously to move forward in the direction you believe God to be leading. Praise be to God!

We are rapidly approaching our first-ever Freedom 5K walk/run. By the time you receive this letter, it will most probably be a thing of history, but I can tell you that nearly two weeks out, it has already shown itself to be a tremendous success. You have already stepped up and volunteered and given of yourselves. I won’t enumerate the list of people who have been especially significant in this effort for fear of forgetting some or negating the efforts of others. We have collectively accomplished this effort as a family. Praise the Lord!

Now, we are turning our attention to VBS. Nathan Holden still has plenty of opportunities for you to be involved in VBS itself or even in the pre-VBS events such as block parties. We will also need help with follow-up after VBS is over. Please feel free to contact Nathan or the church office to express your willingness to help out.

We are also beginning the process of soliciting and training workers for our new AWANA ministry which is scheduled to start up in September, along with our Wednesday night dinners. We can use you even if you can’t chase after children or lift anything. We need people willing to commit about 30 minutes a night on Wednesdays to sit and listen to a child recite a memory verse. (Honestly…who CAN’T do that?) Whatever your ability, we have a need for you. If we can reach the children in our community, we will have an open door into the homes to reach their parents. We are going to need everyone available to make this a truly effective program.

You have already demonstrated a willingness to serve, and God has blessed your efforts. Let’s see what He will do in the days ahead as we continue to follow His leading in reaching our community for Christ!

A Mission-Filled Summer

The youth have kicked off the summer with a mission/ministry garage sale and 5-Day Club Training. We appreciate those who have helped us collect, set up, and organize items for the sale. So far, we have raised over $1000, and hopefully we will continue to sell more. The money raised from the sale will benefit students going on mission this summer and help buy supplies for our 5-Day Clubs. Any remaining funds will help remodel the student center.

I recently introduced a 2010-2012 mission vision to our students. This three-year vision challenges students to be on mission in their Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria and the uttermost parts of the world (Acts 1:8). I have recently heard that the light that shines the brightest overseas is the light that shines brightest at home. I have always wanted to take a group of students on a mission trip overseas, but I don’t want to take students who are just going for a joyride. That is why youth must fulfill missions in their Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria before they have the opportunity to go to the uttermost parts of the earth. This year’s mission to our Jerusalem will be in St. Louis and in area back yards. Students who shine their light at home will be given the opportunity to shine their light overseas in coming years.

Global Encounter/St. Louis/July 9-16

By the time you get this newsletter, 12 of us will be preparing to go to St. Louis. We are taking 10 from our church and 2 others from another local church. Please pray for us as we spend time working with a St. Louis area church, reaching their neighborhood children through Vacation Bible School and Backyard Bible Clubs. Each day, we will be traveling to and from the church where we will be working and our lodging place, as well as picking up and dropping off neighborhood children en route. Please pray for our safety as we commute, as well as that we would respond to opportunities to share Jesus while on the bus.

5-Day Club—Coming to a Back Yard Near You

We are currently planning weeks during June, July, and August when students will be leading 5-Day clubs. If you would like our teens to come to your home and lead a 5-Day club in your yard, please let us know so that we can put it on our schedule. Seven students just completed an all-day training to prepare them in Bible teaching and how to lead children to Jesus. These students will be working hard promoting, preparing, and leading these clubs as they fulfill missions in their Jerusalem. Please pray as they meet the challenges placed before them.

Judea/Samaria—Canada, Here We Come!

Students who fulfill the mission to their Jerusalem (Missouri) will be allowed to participate in missions to their Judea/Samaria next summer. Right now, we are researching the possibility of working with other churches in Northern Ontario. There are a few reasons why this area is heavy on my heart. First, Northern Ontario is the most un-reached area in North America. While there is a religious presence in Northern Ontario, there is a void of evangelical Bible-believing churches. We have the opportunity to be part of a church planting movement in Northern Ontario next summer and to see God do amazing things. Secondly, the people in Ontario speak English. Just as our students will lead 5-Day clubs around the area this summer speaking in English, they can also travel internationally to Canada next summer and lead people to Christ without the need of a translator. As we move toward working in Canada, please pray that God directs our paths and prepares the hearts of those going, as well as the Canadians we will be working with, as we take Jesus to Northern Ontario in 2011.

I am looking forward to a great mission-filled summer where our teenagers work hard in preparing and leading in missions around our area leading people to Christ. Sunday night, I saw an excitement in those who attended the 5-Day Club Training that I haven’t seen in a while. The reason for the excitement is this—they were preparing to fulfill their purpose as a believer. If you are missing true excitement and purpose in your Christian walk, can I challenge you to get on mission with God starting this summer?

II Timothy 2:4 states “No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier.” There are many things that are easier said than done, and this Scripture is no different. How do we go about the daily responsibilities of our lives—the effects of all the things that are out of our control that can come against us and the emotions that we experience from those events—and not be entangled? Faith and prayer.

We serve a God that in times past has proven Himself over and over. In the Old Testament, we see those who recognized the power of God and testified of the One who is ever present with His people.

Rahab said in Joshua 2:11 “our hearts melted and no courage remained in our men because of you, for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and in the earth beneath.” In Psalm 113:7, the Psalmist says, “He raiseth the poor from the dust and the needy from the ash heap.” And in Psalm 23:4 he says, “Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”, and in Psalm 139:5 “You have enclosed me behind and before, and laid your hand upon me.”

We see from these Scriptures that our God is above us over all, beneath us lifting us up, beside us walking, before us and behind us protecting us. In this we can take comfort, and even greater than this is knowing that we have something far beyond what these people of God had—the indwelling of the Spirit. John 14:16 states, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.” There is no place that we are unprotected.

We have to pray with faith. James 5:13 says, “Is any among you afflicted? Let him pray.” James gave this teaching after talking about enduring and then mentioning the patience of Job. All that we are and all that we will ever be…all that we have and all that we will ever have will come from God our Great Provider. If our enemy can get our eyes off of God, we will get entangled in the affairs of life and we will stop being a soldier of the cross.

Continue to pray for one another’s burdens and ask that the Lord would increase our faith. We serve a big God.

On July 13th, the Keenagers will be taking their trip to the Federal Reserve Money Museum. Reservations were required by July 1st. On September 9th, they will be heading for Arrow Rock. They will tour the town and eat lunch at the historic J. Huston Tavern. At 2:00 p.m., they will enjoy the musical, “Pump Boys and Dinettes” at the Arrow Rock Lyceium Theatre, Missouri’s oldest professional regional theatre. Money for reservations was required by June 30th to ensure our seats in September. For more information regarding these two trips, or if you have any questions, please call Diane Reynolds at 537-6179.

In October, they will be heading to Branson. This will be an overnight trip, October 12th and 13th*, and they will be staying at the Gretna Inn. Rooms are $35.00 a night, and they can be paid for upon arrival. There will be taking in several different shows—Kirby (an illusionist), and George Dyer (a tenor). The cost for these two shows will be $48.34 per person. Payment is due by September 1, 2010, and checks should be marked “Branson Trip” in the memo. Well, I can hardly believe it, but summer is upon us! School is out, and schedules are bustling with new exciting outdoor activities. I hope you have already made your plans for how you are going to enjoy the summer and what ways God might use you to impact the lives of others this year.

As I shared a couple of weeks ago, we have been in discussion for some time now about the idea of sponsoring a 5K walk/run in our community. The reasons for doing this are manifold. First, but not foremost, the need to increase our physical health is a matter of importance largely ignored within the church. Some churches grow larger numerically, while others seem content to just grow larger. Frankly, I'm tired of the way being overweight makes me feel, and it's high time for a change. Also, I'm tired of having our denomination noted as the group of obese-preacher driven churches always seeking to tell others how to be disciplined. Finally, although I'm sure I could think of other reasons, I believe that God has created us to enjoy life—not to simply endure it. We will suffer if we share the Gospel, but we shouldn't be suffering because of a combination of overindulgence and lethargy. Please understand my heart in sharing this with you. I seriously doubt that any of you have struggled more with your weight than I have. I have had my ups and downs and even reached moments of futility in my thinking where I had resigned myself to being obese for the rest of my life…but today is a new day. I am losing weight, although I have much further to go. And if I can, so can you. Now obviously, you want to be smart about it and talk to your doctor first to see what he or she recommends, but you can do it!

In addition to our church, our community needs us! They need something to help bring them together. Granted, a race is a small thing, but this is focused upon the one major event our town does. What other civic organization in Greenwood will step up to make something like this happen? Here is our opportunity to give back to the community we say we want to reach. The city officials have agreed and are excited that someone is taking an interest in our community. This is our time! This small step can result in an enormous impact for good and for God, but only if we seize upon it. In order to do that, WE NEED YOU!! We need about 50 or so people to aid in the fundraising and implementation of this event. That translates into needing you to do some part to make this happen. If you can solicit donations…we need you. If you can set up a tent…we need you. If you can drive a shuttle bus…we need you. If you can stand on a street corner, wear a vest, and point toward the right…WE NEED YOU!!

The city has given us the opportunity. The community has given us their attention. Now is our time to let them know we are STILL HERE and we are STAYING!!

Mark your calendar for June 26^th, and help us carry out what can ultimately become a game-changer for your life, your community, but most importantly, for the advancement of the Gospel here in Greenwood.

Afflicted and Comforted

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For as the sufferings of Christ overflow to us, so our comfort overflows through Christ. If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which is experienced in the endurance of the same sufferings that we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that as you share in the sufferings, so you will share in the comfort.”

2 Corinthians 1:3-7 (HCSB)

I lost my aunt this week after a long illness. Through her struggle over the last several years, it was always encouraging to see her optimistic attitude. My uncle proved his commitment to her by truly loving her in sickness and in health. Monday was a sad day as we said “goodbye”, but in a way is was also a celebration as she walked into Heaven. In times like these, I am thankful for my family who supports one another, doesn’t allow differences to divide them, and will do anything to comfort each other.

Just minutes after Dixie took her first breath in Heaven Monday night, my cousin Michelle came into the room. She had recently lost her father to a sudden illness and, therefore, is quite aware of the struggle my cousin Michael will now deal with. As they hugged, he commented, “I now understand what you meant by ‘the new normal’”. It was at that moment the scripture above came to my mind and I began to understand why the Lord allows such things to happen.

Without going through trials, we will never understand how to comfort someone. We have all probably been through some struggle and heard someone say, “I understand how you feel”. Unfortunately, many times such comments are untrue because they have no experience with that specific situation. However, when a consoler has been through the same struggle, their words bring true comfort and stability.

In this passage, I want you to see where comfort originates…the God of mercies and comfort gives us the grace we need to make it through our afflictions. I know it had to be a strange scene outside the hospital room Monday night with singing, praying, and laughing as we comforted each other. I’m sure people asked, “How could those starting the grieving process do such things”? It is because those who gathered in the hallway that night also knew the One Who was calling Dixie home. We all knew the Source of comfort and, therefore, we all knew assuredly where Dixie was going.

I also want you to see why God comforts us. He comforts us so that we, in return, can comfort one another. When we face a trial, we grieve and seek God’s comfort. But in the midst of God’s comfort, we must choose to pass that comfort on to others? In this passage, Paul clearly states, “If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort”. When we pass on the heavenly comfort God gives us in order to comfort others in their time of need, we only strengthen the tie that binds our hearts. This tie helps others endure through their momentary trial.

Isn’t it reassuring that through our afflictions and comfort, we are firmly grounded together? It may be confusing and hard to reconcile why God would allow such struggles to occur, but be confident that God will see you through and then use your struggle to comfort others. While we may never face the trials and persecutions Paul did, we do face trials and troubles in life. We can either go through these times alone or, like a healthy Christian family, we can prop each other up through the strength that the Lord gives us.

God will always raise up men and women to do His will. Joseph, despite all consequences, did what had to be done to fulfill Scripture. I don’t know for sure, but I have my doubts that Joseph did what he did knowing that he had to do it to fulfill Scripture. I believe God impressed upon him to do what he did, and because he was an honorable man and was waiting for the Kingdom and his heart was turned to God, he responded to that call. Jesus would have been buried with common criminals, but that wasn’t how it was supposed to be. He was assigned a grave with the wicked, yet he was with a rich man in His death. (Isaiah 53:9a) God will always raise up men and women to fulfill His will.

What has God impressed upon your heart? If you have been seeking God and His will, don’t think anything he is asking is insignificant. Any amount of the Gospel shared or any act of kindness, goodness, or charity can be what God will use to change a life. Maybe it is something that you believe is too much for you to take on or do, as with Joseph—but if you know it is from God, He will provide, protect and make a way. It is amazing to me that God uses us for His will, but that is the kind of God we serve—a God that loves us and wants to be a part of our lives…and wants us to be a part of other peoples lives.

God has a plan for our lives and it is up to us to seek Him, hear Him, and obey His voice above all else.

KEENAGER'S NEWS

The Keenagers have a lot of exciting plans over the next few months, starting with a Fish Fry at Lake Jacomo Shelter #6 on June 8th.

Then, on July 13th, they will be taking a trip to the Federal Reserve Money Museum. The tours are given to groups of up to 20 people. This is a free tour. Don’t be disappointed—reserve your spot now. Talk to Diane Reynolds to make your reservation by July 1, 2010.

On September 9th, they will be taking a trip to Arrow Rock. They will tour the town and eat lunch at the historic J. Huston Tavern. At 2:00 p.m., they will enjoy the musical, “Pump Boys and Dinettes” at the Arrow Rock Lyceium Theatre, Missouri’s oldest professional regional theatre. The group price is $24 per person for a group of 10 or more. The money for the play reservations must be turned in to the church office by June 30, 2010, to ensure our seats in September. In October, they will be heading to Branson. This will be an overnight trip, October 13th and 14th, and they will be staying at the Gretna Inn. Rooms are $35.00 a night, and they are to be paid for upon arrival. There will be taking in several different shows—Kirby (an illusionist), and George Dyer (a tenor). The cost for these two shows will be $48.34 per person, and payment is due by September 1, 2010, and checks should be marked “Branson Trip” in the memo. April - Jewelry and watches for boys and girls from 2 to 14 years old

May - Hair supplies (combs, brushes, hair ties, barrettes, etc.) Both boys and girls need hair care items. No shampoo or liquid items, however, please.

June - Shirts, socks, hats, underwear for boys and girls sizes T2 - T3 and XS - XL (2-16).

And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they anything to any man; for they were afraid. Mark 16:8

Going through the Easter season stirred up several emotions as I reflected upon all the events that took place some 2000 years ago in the life of Jesus Christ. From being in awe at seeing God’s character and the way Jesus lived His life in His compassion for those He healed and in His righteousness to those whom He rebuked...to being confused at how He could be hailed as a King and then put on a cross in a weeks time by those who had to have known of the great works that He had done. From being humbled that He would go to the cross for me...to being joyful that He rose and that the power of His resurrection ensures all who believe that we, too, will one day be with Him in Glory.

But now what? What do we do with what we know and believe? Do we go through a season that is essentially the pinnacle of Christianity and do nothing? Woe is me, let’s not!

I don’t like to point out the failures of those in the Scriptures, because I know that it would be like the pot calling the kettle black, or is it the kettle calling the pot black—well, whichever it is, I know that I would have done no better. But when I read “...neither said they anything to any man; for they were afraid.”, it really jumps out at me. I can understand fear, because there have been times that I can remember when I did not speak of God because of someone being around that I thought would object to it. It makes me cringe just to think of those times, and I can only ask for God’s forgiveness and for boldness not to be silent when occasions arise again in which someone needs to hear of Who God is and what He means to me.

I think that unbelief is the underlying contributor to why we are fearful and stay silent.

The women went to the tomb with spices to anoint Jesus’ body, and the disciples were in a place with the doors shut for fear of the Jews. Instead, they should have been searching for Him in Galilee where He said He would be on the third day. If they had rock solid faith in Jesus, isn’t that what they should have done? Just the same, if we have rock solid faith in Jesus, shouldn’t we speak of the greatest Gift ever to have been given to mankind—that being Jesus Christ, crucified and risen? Is it fear, or is it unbelief? Or, is it fear because of unbelief? Jesus told us he would never leave us or forsake us, that His grace is sufficient, that He will take care of us, and that He will never turn His back on those who are in Him and speak of the glories of His name.

The God that created everything and is all powerful above all things has more than just our backs...He holds us in the very palm of His hand. We have no reason to be fearful. Think of that—we have no reason to be fearful!

Pray for those in need of salvation, and pray for one another that we will be bold in proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And, as we come together, let’s give praise to God for all that He has done.
